Book Review: Saturday, July 12, 2014The Corpse on Broadstreet by Jim Beard
Helen Jonquil had it all: beauty, looks, and a starring role in The Girl with Everything at the Old Burlesque on Broadstreet. Exiting the stage, the sexy starlet walked straight to her death.
She discovers a dead man in her dressing room. The body is in an extreme state of decomposition. Before she can even recoil in horror a strong arm forces her down to face the corpse. Their lips touch, briefly. Before her friend, former DA Lane Danner can reach her dressing room, Helen Jonquil herself is a desiccated corpse that looks as though it has been dead and buried for a year.
Now, chaos reigns in the city. The Police Chief is struck down within inches of Danner. The Mayor’s wife is attacked, but Danner gets her to safety. Mayor Patrick J Battle—who apparently was a famous adventurer before being blinded—calls a council of war. A note has been left by the man behind the death, a man who claims to BE Death, who goes by the nickname The Corpse. He wants Broadstreet and especially the Old Burlesque shut down.
Battle refuses. At the next opening night, a loudspeaker crackles to life with the voice of The Corpse. Threats are made, but horror waits behind the curtain. The entire cast of The Girl with Everything has been placed on display, pinned upright like insects in a collection. Worse, all of the police who were there to protect the people are also dead in a scene that might have been painted by Jack the Ripper. A regiment of ragged ruffians begins to shoot the panicking audience. Then the building explodes—
War has been declared by The Corpse, backed up by an army of hobos and vagrants heavily armed. The Mayor goes into another council, but this time pointedly tells Danner to make himself scarce since he is no longer DA.
Like a Bassmaster Champion, Jim Beard has chosen his bait well, and understands how to use it most effectively in order to get readers to bite! I for one was hooked from page one. Jim Beard promises the return of this newest super villain in a forthcoming work, The Corpse in the City. Make it soon, Jimbo, your readers will devour it! A perfect five out of five stars for this novelette!

Corpus Vile Death on Broadstreet edition by Jim Beard Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I'd like to say that I'm very impressed with Jim Beard's writing on his latest story. I really enjoyed his work in "Zeppelin Tales", but he has greatly expanded the scope of the environment with "The Corpse on Broadstreet". "Corpse" is a 42 page prequel introducing us to the characters and setting for a forthcoming longer work, entitled "The Corpse in the City". While his earlier story in "Tales" was more self-contained, we have multiple characters, sub-plots, and are introduced to a much larger locale with the release of "Corpse".
Helen Jonquil has the world at her feet. The undisputed Queen of Broadstreet, she is the toast of the town. The most admired leading lady in the city... and she is about to die a horrible death. The shock of her demise, and the strange and unknown method of her killing quickly reach city hall. Enter Lane Danner, head District Attorney. That is until he lost the most recent election. Now he's waiting for the changing of the guard. The killing falls in his lap, and his soon to be ex-boss, Mayor Patrick J. Battle wants it cleared up immediately. The situation is made more tense by the Mayor having won his re-election bid, and there is an undertone of resentment and betrayal between the two friends. After a council of war is called to debate the best possible response to the killing, Lane leaves to set about finding the murderer and bringing him to justice. One more service to the city before departing office... and then the matter escalates.
While making a visit to the scene of the crime, Lane is joined by his friend Lt. Markie St. Joseph. Mayor Battle's wife, Louisa, is also mysteriously at the scene. Out of nowhere a thick fog rolls in, Lt. St. Joseph is murdered, and the Mayor's wife is attacked, but survives thanks to Lane. The culprit is seen briefly, and his form is somehow... unnatural. A reporter from the local news happens to be nearby, and the press quickly dub the perpetrator 'The Corpse'. After receiving a communication from the villain, the Mayor refuses to capitulate. He declares that they are now at war. Little does he know what he is up against...
As far as I'm concerned, "Corpse" was a thrilling read. Mr. Beard fleshes out the setting and characters nicely, and the shadowy villain is VERY interesting. The underlying tension between the main characters is appreciated, and leaves many questions unanswered. This, of course, means that I will eagerly be waiting for the forthcoming release "The Corpse in the City". If you want a well written, fast-paced short with plenty of mystery and action, you can't really go wrong with "The Corpse on Broadstreet". The version, which I am basing my review upon, is only .99 cents! Why don't you take a gander, I'm sure you won't be disappointed! 5 out of 5 smoking guns...
Review of the Corpse on Broadstreet
‘The Corpse on Broadstreet’ is a Pro Se Short by Jim Beard and is a precursor for another story he has coming out called ‘The Corpse in the City’.
Make no mistake, this is a horror story first and foremost. It ends with an unanswered mystery and a terrible disaster on all levels.
The Corpse is a villain on the level of The Joker or some other demented madman who revels in death and terror, of which there is plenty in this short. It is a bloody and horrific story about a city under siege.
What I don’t understand about the story (Which I’m sure will be outlined more in the sequel) is why the Mayor is such a creep to his outgoing DA who lost the election to a newcomer. What is even stranger is that the newcomer, who is not set to be sworn into office for another two months, is being ushered in ahead of time to take the incumbent DA’s place, a man who has proven throughout this story to be more than capable of handling anything that is thrown at him. The incumbent or lame duck DA is actually told to go do something else by his supposed friend, the mayor, at stories end. Yet he’s still in office for another two months.
So there is a mystery here on several fronts. Who is the Corpse? (I have suspicions for three characters we already know of) Why is the mayor betraying his friend? (Again I have suspicions that were alluded to.) How’d this man (The Corpse) come to power? How’d he build a following amongst the disenfranchised?
All in all this was a relatively quick read, and it had a very high sense of tension running throughout. It was written with the usual Jim Beard level of excellence we’ve all come to expect and it makes me want to read more to find out where this mystery leads to.
A good short read and economically priced at .99 cents on .
Five stars.
